What people are saying about No Rules Screenwriting
Stephen Hoover J.D.M.F.A :
Ten years ago I signed up for a weekend workshop with Steve Esteb on screenwriting and he's been my script coach ever since. I’ve gone on to win the Gold Prize at PAGE and other contests. My feature film TINKER premiered on Netflix. I joined the WGA and have three features under option and in development. Steve can assist you in taking your vague idea to an outline form and to polished script. He’s especially good at understanding character and gauging reader reactions. His coaching is not for dilettantes. When you’re serious and willing to put in the work required to go pro, sign up and get going. Put in the time, effort, and investment and you’ll be attending your own movie premiers soon.
Marlice Dugas :
Honesty, together with years of experience and expertise, are at the heart of Steve's approach to teaching screenwriting. What I love about him the most is his authenticity. Steve has a way of making you dig deep to pull out your best story - and he can help point you in the right direction even when you may be clueless. He is next level in assisting with storytelling. He can see what you can’t and help you say it in words that you never thought you could utter. Simply put, he is dynamic and brilliant. I recommend this class to anyone with a script in need of some tender loving care. Steve is truly a script doctor.
Injene V :
I just wanted to thank you for all your help. I can be a little bit shy so i never really say everything I want say in a conversation but I wanted to tell you that you are a big reason screenplay writing clicked for me. That first phone call where you took the time to explain everything, really ironed out everything I had been reading on the craft, so thank you very much!
Chase Haislip :
Before I met Steve, I had a pile of unfinished projects... Scripts that I couldn't quite get over the finish line. Stories that I knew I wanted to tell but struggled to actually write. Steve's mentorship has completely changed my perspective on screenwriting. He has an unparalleled ability to help writers understand the fundamental story they are trying to tell, and all of his instruction and feedback is geared towards helping writers actually complete scripts. Beyond the first draft, he helps writers understand the refinement process - how to work through notes and polish scripts until they are ready. Steve's best quality, though, is his focus and attention to helping writers find their own voice: What differentiates you as a writer? Why is this a story that only you can tell? Since working with Steve, I've completed several pilots, and I am now entering into pre-production on my first short film. My most recent script allowed me acceptance into an esteemed writing and directing cohort. None of this would have been possible without him. Participating in Steve's class completely changed my trajectory as a screenwriter, and I would highly recommend him to anyone who has stories they feel like they need to tell.
Casey Groves :
Steve is more than a screenwriting coach, he’s a collaborator. He encourages me to keep dialogue alive and organic. He challenges me to take big risks and run the red lights in scenes and to do more in a shorter amount of time. As a theater actor and writer, I have a tendency toward writing dialogue heavy scenes. Steve challenges me to l keep it visual and grounded in what the characters are doing on screen. Steve is super clear on script formatting and the “rules of screenwriting,” and he encourages me to follow or not follow those rules once I’m aware of them.
Charmaine L :
Since the first day I met Steve he has always been humble and straight forward. I’m so proud to call him my mentor, he has just given me this foundation as a writer to put what comes from the heart and a creative mind on paper, STRUCTURE. To believe in what you are doing and not worry about others around you who may doubt you. He has just been this ball of inspiration, to actually see someone doing it and not just talk about it is a breathe of fresh air. Under the wings of Steve Esteb, I am now an award winning writer, I wrote, produced, and directed my first film. Anytime I have a doubt about something I’m writing, I can call Steve for direction, and I appreciate that so much. Bottom line: He is a just a great genuine creative soul and I thank God for putting Steve in my path.
Michael H. Anderson :
I’ve been a member of the DGA - ( Directors Guild of America ) for over 25 years as a 1st AD / UPM. I’ve known Steven Esteb for over 17 years. I’ve worked on two Independent films with him. From the writing process to the film's editing, there is nothing I believe Steve can't teach you. If you wish to become a filmmaker, screenwriter, or even an actor, Steve is the kind of person you want to learn from. There isn’t anything he doesn’t know about how to teach you to get the best out of yourself!
Mark A. Dispenza :
Steven Esteb has been my scriptwriting coach almost continuously for 10 years. He is my go-to reader for everything I write because I can trust the honesty of his feedback, his competence in the field, and his sense of storytelling and character development. I know that I can always count on him to encourage my professional growth and celebrate my successes. His experience as actor, writer and director allows his students to benefit from a well-rounded perspective to better inform their writing. I frequently recommend him to other writers who are looking to grow as storytellers.
John Couret :
Through your teaching I’ve not only learned story structure but also found the confidence I needed to bring my story to life. Your patience, understanding and ability to blend real world experiences with creative expression are invaluable to anyone looking to improve their writing. Thank you Steve! I couldn’t recommend you enough!
Pat Mashburn :
There are so many things that stand out which speak to how inspirational and how much of an impact Steven Esteb has had on my screenwriting future. I've know him and have grown way beyond what I thought I could ever do. The biggest thing that has stuck with me is one of the first things he ever said - "If you are coming to a stop sign, don't slow down. Run right through it!" It was the beginning of a fire within to grow my craft of screenwriting. A person might think they have a great idea - and they might - but if you put your faith in Steven and open yourself up to important and constructive criticism, you will be on your way. As a testament to his impact, I just recently optioned two screenplays with 20th Century Studios. It's been a long journey, but it didn't really take shape until I humbled myself 14 years ago and stepped into his class to begin the learning process. If you trust him, he will help you make your average characters more impactful, which will make your story idea blossom. Thank you Steven for making me better than what I was and instilling the burning desire to keep pushing myself towards greater heights.
